Nestled in the heart of Bhutan’s breathtaking landscapes, the Royal Botanical Park is a haven of biodiversity and a living symbol of the country’s rich natural heritage. Spanning an impressive 12,000 hectares, this park holds the distinction of being Bhutan’s first botanical park, inaugurated in June 2008 to commemorate the Coronation of His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and the Centenary of the Bhutanese Monarchy.

The park serves as a vital biological corridor, linking the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park with the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Park, facilitating the migration of wildlife through Bhutan’s pristine ecosystems. It is a treasure trove of flora and fauna, captivating visitors with its vibrant natural beauty.

Within this vast expanse lies Lampelri Recreational Park, a serene 50-hectare retreat located along the Dochula-Punakha Highway, just 30 km from Thimphu and 41 km from Punakha. Popular among locals and tourists alike, Lampelri is perfect for day trips and picnics, offering a peaceful escape into nature.

The Lampelri Recreational Park is a paradise for plant enthusiasts, boasting an extraordinary 40 out of Bhutan’s 46 rhododendron species. These include 29 species growing naturally and 11 carefully cultivated in the park’s gardens. During the blooming season, the landscape transforms into a vibrant canvas of colors, drawing visitors from around the world. The park also houses 114 species of ferns and countless wild orchids, making it a botanist’s dream destination.

The park’s pristine habitats provide a safe haven for some of Bhutan’s most significant and endangered wildlife. Visitors may spot sambar deer, the elusive Himalayan black bear, the playful red panda, or even the majestic tiger, which occasionally graces the park while traversing the biological corridor.

Since May 17, 2023, Green Bhutan Corporation Limited (GBCL) has taken over the park’s development, operations, and maintenance and is committed to enhancing the park’s natural beauty, ensuring its sustainability, and promoting it as a center for recreation, education, and conservation.
