The launch of UNESCO’s IP2 Environmental Education/Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) videos was successfully held at Lampelri Recreational Park, graced by the distinguished presence of Honorable Lyonpo Yeezang De Thapa, Minister of Education.
The Lyonpo addressed the importance of integrating environmental education into Bhutan’s schools and communities, emphasizing that education for sustainable development is essential for nurturing responsible citizens and protecting Bhutan’s unique natural heritage. In her keynote, she lighted that, “Our youth are the custodians of tomorrow, and it is our responsibility to ensure they inherit a thriving and beautiful natural environment.”
The event featured the official unveiling and screening of four educational videos developed under UNESCO’s IP2 initiative, designed to strengthen environmental awareness and sustainable practices among learners. A panel discussion on the “Importance of Environmental Education in Lampelri Recreational Park” followed, with insights shared by Dr. Norbu Wangdi, Director of Bhutan Ecological Society; Sonam Wangdi, Chief Forestry Officer, DoFPS; Tshering Penjor, Gup and community leader; and Sonam Zangmo, Teacher at YHSS.
The gathering concluded with a walk around Lampelri Recreational Park, providing participants with a firsthand experience of the pristine environment that the initiative seeks to protect and lunch afterward.
