Extensive efforts underway across multiple dzongkhags with over 100 hectares covered and 90,000+ trees planted

The Green Bhutan Corporation Limited (GBCL) is pleased to say substantial progress in its plantation and ecological restoration programs carried out across Bhutan during the month of July. With favorable monsoon conditions and coordinated efforts from local forestry officials, field staff, and community members, GBCL has completed and initiated several projects aimed at restoring degraded land, enhancing biodiversity, and contributing to climate resilience.

As of the end of July, plantation and maintenance activities have covered over 100 hectares of land, involving the plantation and care of more than 90,000 trees across various locations.

Overview of Completed and Ongoing Works

Sangachokhor has emerged as one of the largest plantation sites for the season, with two phases in progress. At Sangachokhor I, GBCL has planted 59,900 saplings across 37 hectares, comprising species such as oak (Quercus griffithii), blue pine (Pinus wallichiana), and spruce. The adjacent Sangachokhor II area, also spanning 37 hectares, is undergoing active plantation with 30,000 trees of the same species mix.

In Tsirang Dzongkhag, successful plantations were completed at two key sites:

  • Waklaytar (Sergithang Gewog): 10.6 hectares planted with teak and Daubanga grandiflora
  • Phaladay (Phuentenchu Gewog): 12.27 hectares planted with teak and Pani Saaj (Terminalia tomentosa)

GBCL also completed plantation activities in Wangdue Dzongkhag at Jazhipang, covering 3 hectares with a mix of oak (600), teak (200), and walnut (50) trees.

In Trongsa Dzongkhag, ongoing maintenance efforts are being carried out at Rangthang (Langthil) to support previously established plantations. The site currently involves nurturing Gmelina arborea (1,500 saplings) and Melia (600 saplings) to ensure healthy growth and long-term survival.

Looking Forward

Several of the sites, including both Sangachokhor plantations, remain under active implementation, and additional activities are scheduled to continue through August, subject to weather conditions and terrain accessibility.

GBCL acknowledges and appreciates the collaborative support of the Department of Forests and Park Services, gewog administrations, local communities, and our field teams for their dedication and hard work in advancing Bhutan’s green goals.

As we move forward, GBCL remains committed to enhancing Bhutan’s natural heritage and leading by example in sustainable landscape restoration.
